The legend of Saint George and the Dragon tells of Saint George taming and slaying a dragon that demanded human sacrifices. The story begins with a dragon who extorted tribute from villagers. When they ran out of livestock and trinkets for the dragon, they started giving up a human tribute once a year. This was acceptable to the villagers until a well-loved princess was chosen as the next offering. The saint rescues the princess and slays the dragon. The legend spread rapidly through the Byzantine culture in the 12th century, when it reached the Western world, and became a favorite tale of chivalry and a popular subject for the visual and decorative arts.
The allure of adventure and bravery has never gone out of fashion, and this coin ring is a fine example of that. Copied during the middle of the twentieth century, it has beautiful detail and structure. A wonderful unisex ring perfect for anyone who feels legendary today!
