Ancient Romans of the upper classes wore signet rings. Wearing one demonstrated one's importance and was also used in sealing official documents. They could be made of gold, silver or bronze, and decorated with a symbol chosen by the owner. The dolphin was a companion of Neptune, the god of the sea, and was considered a talisman of protection and divine assistance, as well as being associated with the ocean and sensual love. Rings with dolphin motifs were worn to show fidelity to a betrothed, and also by navigators of large ships. Roman men would have several signet rings, which they would sometimes choose at random, as a form of predicting the future.

On one of her excursions to Europe, Kathy was able to find an ancient Roman signet ring made of bronze. So intrigued by its design, she took a chance and had it replicated in beautiful 14 karat yellow gold! The ring has a wonderful feel to it, and is decorated with a stylized dolphin. A handsome piece that pays homage to the cradle of civilization!
