Our Lady of La Salette is an apparition reported by two French shepherd children, said to have occurred at La Salette-Fallavaux, France in 1846. In 1851, the local bishop approved the public devotion and prayers to Our Lady of La Salette, and by 1879, the Pope granted a canonical coronation to the image located within the Basilica. A Russian style tiara was given to the image, rather than the solar-type used in the traditional depictions of Our Lady, making her easily identifiable.
This estate medal is crafted in silver and decorated with enamel. The colorful obverse side shows Our Lady speaking to the two children in the fields, while the blue reverse shows her bent over, in prayer and suffering. This style of enameling is common in older Catholic medals. A wonderfully detailed token, it is hard to date as the style remained the same for decades. The perfect piece for any collector of religious jewelry!
