Persian turquoise was very popular among Victorians. It was brought to Europe via Turkey, and called “Pierre Turquoise” (Turkish Stone) by the French. It is harder than American turquoise, and has a pure blue color with no matrix, which was desirable in the Victorian Era. Queen Victoria gifted her wedding attendants brooches with pave' settings of the stone, accented with pearls. This became a hugely popular combination in jewelry during the era, with many pieces flooding the market. The romantic Victorians considered the bright blue turquoise to be symbols of friendship and love, with the pearls symbolizing purity. These pieces made perfect gifts for friends and loved ones.
