Ruling most of the Indian subcontinent, the Mughal Empire is said to have been founded in 1526 This imperial structure lasted until 1720, shortly after the death of the last major emperor. Reduced subsequently to the region in and around Old Delhi by 1760, the empire was formally dissolved by the British Raj after the Indian Rebellion of 1857. A factor in its longevity was that it did not vigorously suppress the cultures and peoples it came to rule; rather, it equalized and placated them through new administrative practices.
Jewelry was so important to the Mughal rulers that they set-up royal workshops where pieces were made using the finest craftsmanship. It often took several artisans, each with their own area of expertise, to create one finished jewel.
Crafted in rich gold, including 16, 14 and 10 karat, this wonderful brooch has incredible goldwork with accents of deep blue turquoise and natural river pearls. The reverse is almost as beautiful as the front, and we have added two looped bales to easily wear as a pendant. A fantastic piece with a wealth of cultural history, it will look just as amazing paired with jeans and a t-shirt as it will with a flowing caftan!
