Antique 22K, Carnelian & Enamel Mourning Ring

Mourning jewelry became popular during the 18th century, when sentiment, both sorrowful and romantic, began to be expressed in a more allegorical style.  The phrase 'Memento Mori" (Remember, you must die) was used profusely in art and literature, with the sentiment prominently displayed on mourning jewelry. This wonderful example is crafted in 22 karat yellow gold, with white enamel covering the outer shank on the ring face and shoulders. Black and gold enamel lettering spells out MEMENTO MORI, and a deep orange carnelian graces the center. The inscription on the inside of the shank commemorates Samuel Walbank, who died November 5, 1804 at age 66. A poignant and beautiful keepsake from long ago, it will be a favorite in your mourning jewelry collection!
