Repousse', a French word meaning 'driven back',  is a technique where a design is hammered into metal from the reverse side.  This art reaches back in history to the Assyrians, Phoenicains, and other Asian civilizations. It was a popular decoration for jewelry during the Victorian and Edwardian Eras, and is still used today. Gold filled pieces became more widely produced as the Middle Classes became more prosperous. Repousse' work was often utilized on these pieces.
