Crafted in 18 karat yellow gold, this intriguing French brooch features a smooth deep brown to black agate cabochon that resembles a classic convex mirror, seen in historic works of art and still used today in home decor. The French referred to these mirrors as "oeil de sorcierere", which translates to "witch's eye". In France, and other parts of Northern Europe in the middle ages, the convex mirror was thought to hold magical powers. Like a huge eye, the mirror could observe everything going on around it and repel any evil forces. The custom was to place one next to a door or window to ward off the entry of evil. The dark agate stone on this brooch has been polished to a glossy, reflective sheen, mimicking the witch's eye perfectly. Accented with diamonds and pearls, it has a bale on the back, as well as a fold down C-clasp. The pin is removable, transforming it into a pendant. Considering the somber color of the stone, this piece would have been worn during the mourning period. This is a remarkable and unusual piece you'd be wise to include in your collection!
