The technique of enameling on jewelry originated in Limoges, France during the 16th century, and was perfected in the 17th century, bringing fame to the region where it is still recognized for beautiful enameled pieces today. The process involves applying a white base over a copper or gold disc, then using ground glass pigments, it is applied and fired. In this piece, the enamel has been foiled, giving the scene a depth and saturation that really glows!
Set in a luscious 18 karat yellow gold finely worked frame, our little enamel depicts a putti (cherub, or baby angel) sitting amongst vibrant florals, with a butterfly hovering at his elbow. This could also be representing Cupid and Psyche from ancient Roman mythology. Tiny, perfect natural seed pearls enhance the fanned wings on either side of the artwork, providing a resplendent little home for such a spectacular vision! Sure to dazzle all who get a glimpse every time you wear it!
