Gentlemen of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries tended to decorate their watch chains with fobs. Watches were worn in the waistcoat pocket, with a chain attached for easy access. The fob helped to add a counterweight so the chain wouldn't be pulled by the heavier watch. Some fobs were used as seals or other handy tools, while others, such as our example were ornamental.
This fantastic French watch fob is crafted in 18 karat yellow gold, with a twisted snake atop a little platform holding a carved jade parrot captive with golden ties. This piece is stamped with a French cog, or rooster head which was used from 1798-1809. Beautifully and skillfully executed, this unique fob will make a great pendant for your favorite chain or ribbon!
