The Arts & Crafts Movement came into being based on the ideals of William Morris and John Ruskin, who felt that Industrialism was the downfall of the English lifestyle and aesthetic, dehumanizing the production of goods and persuading the Victorians to purchase inexpensive and gaudy decor. In the 1860s, they and their followers strove for the return to skilled craftsmanship. Morris's interior design company became famous for making wallpaper, textiles and stained glass. Around 30 years later, in the 1890s, Art Nouveau made an appearance. While not encouraging social reform, it did advocate a total aesthetic that incorporated art, architecture, and interior design. The style is inspired by graceful and curving natural forms, with flowers, plants, insects and animals favorite subjects. The two styles were contemporary to each other for a short period of time, and the two meshed well together.

This stylish brooch was most likely produced around the time the two movements coexisted, roughly 1890-1910. It is made of silver with wonderfully detailed leafy vines on the body that resemble a philodendron plant. In the center is an faceted oval citrine, casting a sunny yellow hue on its surroundings! The elongated shape was popular, as ladies liked to fasten cloaks and collars with decorative brooches. A great piece from a great era in the Arts, you'll really enjoy having it in your collection!
