Hand painted miniature portraits were the predecessors of photographs. When there was no other way to record a likeness of someone, the miniatures were treasured and passed down in families. Some portrait miniatures were painted of a specific person, and others were of classic style beauties rather than a particular real person. Often, these pieces were made into jewelry and worn as decoration, such as our wonderful hand painted enamel ring by the Limoges company. The technique of enameling on jewelry originated in Limoges, France during the 16th century, and was perfected in the 17th century, bringing fame to the region where it is still recognized for beautiful enameled pieces today. The process involves applying a white base over a copper or gold disc, then using ground glass pigments, it is applied and fired. In this piece, the enamel has been foiled, giving the scene a depth and saturation that really glows!
This stunning ring depicts the head of Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom. Her Roman counterpart is Minerva. She wears a golden helmet and armor, and is set against a soft atmospheric background. Two glittering diamonds rest at the shoulders of the shank, which is crafted in 10 karat yellow gold. Perfect for anyone who loves the Classics!
