Wishbones from fowl have been considered lucky talismans since at least the twelfth century, when warriors carried them from their dinners to the battlefield. Victorians loved symbolism, and often gifted friends and family with little trinkets for special occasions and endeavors.
This adorable little brooch, made of 15 karat yellow gold, depicts two birds balancing on a wishbone, the larger one offering the other a morsel of food, perhaps a berry, made of red spinel. This would have been the perfect gift to present to an expectant or new mother. A darling piece, with just as much appeal and sentiment today as when it was fashioned:
