The Victorians loved to incorporate symbolism into their jewelry. It made a piece more significant to give and to wear if there was an emotional connection to it. The motif of the swallow bird indicated romance, faithfulness, and the hope of your loved one returning home safely.
This brooch is crafted from silver, with dainty turquoise cabochons on the tips of her wings. On the underside is a woven lock of hair. It is blond and dark brown, perhaps indicating it came from two lovers, who had to be apart for some time.
