The Georgian era is a period in British history from 1714 to c. 1830–37, named after the Hanoverian kings George I, George II, George III and George IV. The sub-period that is the Regency era is defined by the regency of George IV as Prince of Wales during the illness of his father George III.  It is a highly romanticized era, with the literature, styles and fashions greatly admired today.

This wonderful Georgian ring has an onyx intaglio with the name 'Mary' carved in reverse. This would have been used as a seal; when pressing it into soft wax, the name would be legible. Used to seal ones correspondence and to sign important documents, it has a very practical use. This type of ring was utilized more commonly by men, which makes our 'Mary' more unusual than the average signet! Of course, we couldn't resist the reference to the old campfire story of Bloody Mary writing her name backwards in the mirror, so hence our spooky naming of this special, historic piece!
