Pietra Dura, an Italian plural meaning "hard rocks" or "hardstones" is a term for the inlay  technique of using cut and fitted, highly polished colored stones to create images. It is considered a decorative art. The stonework, after the work is assembled loosely, is glued stone-by-stone to a substrate after having previously been "sliced and cut in different shape sections; and then assembled together so precisely that the contact between each section was practically invisible". Stability was achieved by grooving the undersides of the stones so that they interlocked, rather like a jigsaw puzzle, with everything held tautly in place by an encircling 'frame'. Many different colored stones, particularly marbles, were used, along with  semiprecious, and even precious. It first appeared in Rome in the 16th century, reaching its full maturity in  Florence.

The word “Bohemian” derives from the region of Bohemia, a kingdom which later became Czechoslovakia. Among other flourishing trades, this region produced gorgeous, deep red garnet gemstones and a style of jewelry that quickly became popular in the late Victorian Era and through the turn of the century.

The two fascinating materials have been united in this Victorian era brooch! The town of Carlsbad (now known as Karlovy Vary) in Western Bohemia of the Czech Republic was a popular resort in the early 19th century due to its natural thermal spas, and is located approximately 1000 km (620 mi) from Florence. Even with the great distance, the import trade was thriving!

An oblong brooch features a floral pattern executed in the Pietra Dura technique, with the town's name 'Carlsbad" engraved on the lower portion. A halo in deep red Bohemian garnet adds a wonderful sparkle! A great Victorian souvenir from someone's Grand Tour, and a special keepsake to add to your antique jewelry collection!
