Founded in 1759 by Josiah Wedgwood, the Wedgwood pottery company is still producing many of their original designs today. The familiar Jasper Ware, a white relief on a blue background is immediately recognizable and has often been referred to as "Wedgwood Blue". A lesser known color is referred to as black basaltes or basalt wear. The name comes from the colcanic rock basalt which was used to create the dark color.
This striking Wedgwood brooch is set in Pinchbeck, or gold over silver. The little round medallion depicts cupid with his bow and arrows. The stark black background shows the white figure off to perfection! A wonderful example of basalt ware, and it has a hidden bale, so you can wear it as a brooch or a pendant!
