Hand painted miniature portraits were the predecessors of photographs. When there was no other way to record a likeness of someone, the miniatures were treasured and passed down in families. Some portrait miniatures were painted of a specific person, and others were of classic style beauties rather than a particular real person. Often, these pieces were made into jewelry and worn as decoration, such as our pendant . The Victorians loved romantic depictions of pastoral scenes, and this is such an example.

Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) was a French artist renowned for his scenic and romanticized paintings. This lovely locket back pendant features a miniature hand painted scene of a young girl, her arms full of wheat in a beautifully executed garden setting. A lock of hair is kept safely inside, along with a vintage photo of a rather glamorous woman., perhaps a descendant of the original owner. Set in 18 karat gold and silver, it is adorned with seed pearls and foiled back pink paste stones. A remarkable, sentimental little time capsule with gorgeous artwork, she is ready to become your next treasure!
