The word “Bohemian” derives from the region of Bohemia, a kingdom which later became Czechoslovakia. Among other flourishing trades, this region produced gorgeous, deep red garnet gemstones and a style of jewelry that quickly became popular in the late Victorian Era and through the turn of the century. A gorgeous gem that has ties to Greek mythology and the story of Persephone and her pomegranate, symbolizing blood, death and rebirth.
Elephant hair jewelry originated thousands of years ago in Africa. It was believed that wearing a strand collected from the tail or gathered from natural shedding would protect and provide good fortune to the wearer. During the British Raj, Westerners would travel to India and Africa for safari and commission pieces of jewelry incorporating elephant hair.
This unusual and quirky garnet ring has been previously converted using a Bohemian garnet element and an elephant hair ring. Crafted in 18 karat yellow gold, the ring top most likely originated as a stick pin. With an oval cabochon garnet and three accent garnets stemming from the top, it has an organic, other worldly feel, like a fantasy flower or creature. Somewhere along the line, it was mounted on an elephant hair ring: a single strand of hair with a thin strip of gold twisted around it to create a stripe effect. Definitely a conversation piece, and a wonderful example of two trends from the Victorian era joined to create a one of a kind piece!
