.Neuchatel is a Swiss city sometimes referred to historically by the German name Neuenburg. Both the French and German names mean 'New Castle'. During the middle of the 19th century, it became known as the center of watchmaking, and enjoyed a thriving economy.

Hand painted miniature portraits were the predecessors of photographs. When there was no other way to record a likeness of someone, the miniatures were treasured and passed down in families. Some portrait miniatures were painted of a specific person, and others were of classic style beauties rather than a particular real person. Often, these pieces were made into jewelry and worn as decoration, such as our ring. The Victorians loved to collect pieces from travels to other countries, and this little gem is most likely a souvenir piece.

Crafted in 18 karat yellow gold with a gorgeous Etruscan Revival setting, this wonderful navette ring has been hand painted with the image of a woman dressed in colorful clothing. She holds a leafy branch in one hand and a book in the other while looking directly out at the viewer. We have speculated that she may be an herbalist or healer. The reverse of this little painting reads 'Neuchatel'. An altogether interesting and lovely little bit of culture and history, small enough to fit on your finger!
