The Marzocco is the heraldic lion that is a symbol of Florence, believed to be the first piece of public sculpture. Commissioned by the Republic of Florence in the late 14th century, the lion stood at the city center in the Piazza della Signoria, on a platform attached to the Palazzo Vecchio. It was a spot for speakers to orate to nearby crowds. The statue is now lost, having weathered with time into an unrecognizable mass of stone. The best known version was by Donatello, made in 1418. It was moved in 1885 and replaced by the copy we see today. The obscure name 'Marzocco' is a mystery to some experts, but could refer in part to the Roman god of war, Mars.

Carved from verdant malachite, this wonderful piece was found as a loose cameo. Simply set in a 14 karat yellow gold frame it has a generous bale that will accommodate most any ribbon or chain. A wonderful piece, sure to become a favorite in your collection!
