The main use of the watch chain was to simply ensure the security of the pocket watch. The pocket watch emerged in the 17th Century and the style grew in popularity when Charles II popularized the waistcoat in 1675. By the Victorian Era, most men sported these decorative yet practical contraptions. The fob helped to add a counterweight so the chain wouldn't be pulled by the heavier watch, while the bar served to secure the chain through the gentleman's buttonhole.
Crafted in 9 karat yellow gold, this chain has a wonderful tactile quality, with each link stamped 9. It sports a wonderful fob with bloodstone set on one side and carnelian on the other. A fabulous find, and a must-have in any antique jewelry collection!
