The snake motif has been utilized in jewelry since the Ancients. Long considered as a symbol of royalty and wisdom, it has been documented that Cleopatra was famous for her snake jewelry. Later, the design was popularized during the Victorian Era when Prince Albert famously presented Queen Victoria with an engagement ring in the form of a snake. Representing eternal love, that ring caused a sensation, and snake jewelry has been a fashion statement ever since.
Crafted in Sterling silver with two gold washed sections, this exotic collar has two snake heads with swirled textured scales. One has a forked tongue, while the other has a hooked one. Two pale purple amethysts serve as the brains, and incised waves and scallops run the length of the body. Curios hallmarks can be seen on the reverse: one unidentified, but possibly Asian as it appears to be a Yin & yang symbol. The other, of three elm leaves is a Yugoslavian export mark that was discontinued in 1977. A fascinating piece that is adjustable and can be worn by many sizes!
