The existence of aluminum / aluminum oxide was explored by Englishman Sir Humphrey Davy in the early 19th century, but it took until 1854 for Henri Sainte Clair Deville to successfully produce a commercial grade material. He caused a sensation at the Paris Exhibition of 1857 with his aluminum articles.

Aluminum was classed as a precious metal for several years, and by the 1860s it was mounted in gilt metal for use in jewelry. Jewelers were fascinated by its light weight, and its novelty appealed to the fashionable classes. Only made during a brief window, today it is hard to find aluminum jewelry from the mid-1800s, when it was more popular than gold!

This very rare bracelet and brooch set was recently sourced in Paris while on a buying trip. Crafted in aluminum with gold accents and beautiful almandine garnets, it is a history lover's treasure! The bracelet has six elements, each set with nine garnets, and the brooch contains ten. Elaborate metal work is in the Gothic Revival style, and of course, we must have the French bow on the brooch! So mythical and enchanting, we have named this set 'The Grail Maiden', in honor of the King Arthur tales. Generously sized, and with secure, working clasps, it is a set destined to become a prize in your antique jewelry collection!
