Crosses have been worn as symbols of Christianity for thousands of years, and the nineteenth century saw a surge of popularity in this motif with the Church being held in absolute regard, and piety cherished above all. The custom of wearing a cross pendant has remained in vogue ever since.

This wonderful cross brooch originates from Normandy and is referred to as a 'Croix de Saint Lo', or sometimes a 'Croix Bosse'. They were traditionally worn by women of the region hanging from a black ribbon worn around the throat. A heart pendant was usually on the upper part of the cross. These pieces were an important part of the trousseau, and married ladies wore them every day. We can only surmise that our example was once a larger piece that has been converted into a brooch at some point in time. Rose cut diamonds are set in silver and backed with 18 karat yellow gold. The patina on the silver has added a gothic atmosphere to the piece over the years, and we did not dare polish it! A special piece of history to wear near your heart!
