Heraldry arose in the 12th century, during the Crusades. To distinguish friend from foe, knights began wearing special markings on their shields and the coats worn over their armor. Hence, Coat of Arms! These items worn during battles and exploration were passed down from father to son, and soon became the 'logo' of the family. Heraldic symbolism is vast and varied, yet it is possible to decipher the meaning when presented with a particular coat of arms.

This incredible brooch is skillfully crafted in 18 karat yellow gold. Backed by a gleaming burnt orange carnelian stone and overlayed with the gold work, it has the traditional knight's head at the top and a shield bearing the symbols of the family in the center. Further goldwork decorates the framework, with floral, leaf and vine motifs. The engraved shield has a heart, which symbolized loyalty, and a savage, a wild man with a club, which symbolized strength and valor. The shield he holds is an emblem of defense.  The perfect unisex brooch for anyone who is fascinated with the history of knights and their conquests!
