During the Victorian Era, the custom of mourning became very popular. When Queen Victoria's beloved Prince Albert died, she famously remained in mourning for the rest of her life. The social norms required women to wear black for months or even years, depending upon the relationship one shared with the deceased. Even jewels were to be black, and onyx, jet and black enamel were favorites. Men also participated in the mourning attire ritual, although the length of time was shorter than for women.

Set in 15 karat yellow gold, this English ring has black enamel on the face, with a cross motif adorned with six seed pearls, a symbol for tears of sorrow. Linear black enamel decoration accents the wonderfully scrolling shoulders, while a locket back contains woven hair. A poignant little keepsake of a bygone era, and a must-have for any mourning jewelry collector!
