Victorians loved to use flowers as symbolism of certain attributes, as well as a means for secret communication between friends and lovers. Tulips were a symbol of passion, charity and love.
During the mourning period of one year, widows wore only black. After that time, a few muted colors could be reintroduced to her wardrobe, with purple or lavender taking the lead.
This large faceted amethyst ring is crafted in 14 karat yellow gold, with a golden tulip and small diamond on the ring face. The shank and bezel are decorated with black enamel, indicating that this is a mourning ring, or half-mourning ring. An inscription on the inner shank is partially obscured by the sizing ring, which was added at a later time in history. A wonderful example of the romantic Victorians and their use of floriography as well as their mourning customs!
