Mourning jewelry was made popular by Queen Victoria, who remained in mourning for forty years after the untimely death of her beloved Prince Albert.  Locks of the deceased's hair were often woven into intricate plaits and made into necklaces, watch chains, bracelets, and even earrings. Some were kept under glass in a locket, ring, or brooch, such as this example.

Framed in shiny black enamel with a golden scalloped border, this brooch contains braided blond hair under glass, a little preserved relic of a departed loved one, kept close to remember always. A wonderful and collectable piece for anyone who admires this historic memorial tradition!
