Amethyst stones have been thought for generations to provide protection and were worn by the Ancients as a talisman for luck. The beautiful violet purple hue has also had an allure not to be resisted. Beloved by Victorians as well, it was the first color a widow was allowed to wear after coming out of mourning. Seed pearls were often incorporated into mourning and half-mourning jewelry, as they represented 'tears of sorrow'.
This Victorian ring has an oblong faceted amethyst stone haloed by crimped set seed pearls. The style of the shank is rather masculine, bringing to mind a signet ring, which would have been worn on a man's pinky finger. The larger size could indicate that it belonged to a man, or that a woman wore it over a gloved hand. Full of beautiful sentimentality and utterly Victorian, it's a must for any antique jewelry collector!
