The Sibilla Cumana (Cumaean Sibyl) is an oil painting by the Italian Baroque painter Domenicho Zampieri in Rome. The subject matter of the Sibyl was used by the artist about four times and was a common theme favored by the intellectual circles in Rome.

The sibyls were prophetesses or oracles in Ancient Greece, and the specific one who most concerned the Romans was the Cumaean Sibyl, located near the Greek city of Naples. She is said to have sold the original Sibylline books to Tarquinius Superbus, the last king of Rome. In Virgil's Fourth Edogue, she foretells the coming of a savior- possibly a flattering reference to the poet's patron, August. Christians later identified this savior as Jesus Christ.

Victorian cameos were often carved in the manner of famous artworks and sold to the upper classes while taking their Grand Tours. Westerners would purchase them as souvenirs, with the intent to have them set when back home.

This cameo was found loose, and we have set it classically in 18 karat yellow gold with charming Etruscan Revival boules stationed on the front. The detailed carving depicts the turbaned sibyl, wearing beautifully draped clothing and holding a scroll. The neck of a musical instrument (an oud) is behind her shoulder, reinforcing the mysterious and exotic feel that the Victorians were so drawn to. A wonderful piece, full of history and beauty you'll love to show off!
