Mourning jewelry has existed for centuries, but it wasn't until Queen Victoria's beloved consort, Prince Albert died at the young age of 42 in 1861 that the custom became a wildly popular fashion statement. Generally, Victorians remained in mourning for at least one year, and longer. The women were required to wear black clothing and jewelry to show their respect and love for the deceased. It became common for the family to commission mourning pieces to wear, and give them as remembrance gifts at the funeral.
Converted from an antique mourning jewelry element, this striking ring has an Archeological Revival 18 karat gold setting with an onyx face and a little silver set forget me not flower of natural seed pearls at the center. Seed pearls symbolized 'tears of sorrow' in mourning jewelry, and forget me nots were also a common theme. The 14K yellow gold shank is an antique replica with floral motifs on the shoulders that echo the design of the original piece. A great ring to wear with anything, from a long black dress to jeans and a tee, you'll really enjoy this chic ring in your collection!
