A cameo is a form of glyptography, or bas-relief carving, most often cut into glass, hard-stones, and shells. Artworks were crafted to create two layers on one piece of material, the top of which protruded from its background, creating a multi-dimensional artwork. These detailed reliefs were often used to adorn pieces of jewelry, including brooches, necklaces, bracelets and rings. The earliest cameos took inspiration from prehistoric petroglyphs, which documented important religious and symbolic iconography onto rock faces.
Victorians loved cameos, and wore them prolifically throughout the era, often purchasing them as souvenirs on their Grand Tours. Popular subject matter included mythology, fairy tales and legends.
The Book of Enoch mentions the archangel Baraquiel, the chief of guardian angels who is associated with abundance. He is depicted scattering flowers down to earth in classical art. The most famous painting of this subject matter was executed by Bartolome and resides in the Museo del Prado.
The cameo on this ring came to us with no setting. A classic Roman style shank was chosen, and it showcases this marvelous little work of art perfectly! Baraquiel, in flight, carries a cherub while scattering flower petals. A wonderful little ring perfect for both collectors of cameos as well as angel motifs!
