This intricate piece depicts a popular motif in Provencial France during the Napoleon III Era (1852-1870) and into the beginning of the Third Republic era (1871-1940). The traditional costumes of the time had somewhat open necklines, hence the large size of the pendant. Saint Esprit means "Holy Spirit", part of the Christian Trinity. Usually depicted with an olive branch, a symbol of peace, this example has two birds, the Dove, representing the spirit of God (usually flying down towards earth) and the second possibly being an eagle or a swallow. Made of silver and paste, with two pieces joined in the center for a dangling effect, it can be worn in the reverse for a less glittery option but an equally striking look.
