Austria-Hungary was a constitutional monarchy that was created in 1867 and was dissolved in 1918.  During this short period of time, many opulent, dramatic pieces of jewelry were produced. Close in proximity to Germany and Italy, Renaissance Revival style was a significant influence. Gothic, Biblical and Mythical themes were prevalent, as was the use of closely clustered jewels, both genuine and paste. This style was very popular throughout Europe and North America, and our piece is a wonderful example of how a piece evolves over time.

This pendant has components from three different pieces. A pair of French gold, silver, diamond and emerald earrings from the 18th century were attached to an early 19th century Austro-Hungarian pendant featuring  two Mermen holding emerald drops topped by natural seed pearls. We are so obsessed with these guys, we have named them 'The Telchines', which were sea spirits of Ancient Greece. The center is a diamond haloed quartz crystal which had a tiny painting in it at one time but has since degraded to a wonderful, seafoam swirl! A natural baroque pearl dangles from the bottom of the pendant, which may have been part of the original design, as the seashell motif is apparent on the backs of both the crystal and the pearl. A fabulous piece of fantasy jewelry that will make you feel like a siren every time you wear it!
