French opaline glass was produced from the late 18th century to the end of the 19th. It is considered to be an art glass and of the highest quality. The beautiful semi-opaque hand blown glass first became popular during Napoleon's reign, reaching its height of favor during the time of Napoleon III between 1850-1860. It ranges in colors, with the most popular being robin's egg blue. The most well known producer of this glass was the Portieux Vallerysthal company, with glass production beginning in 1836. The objects created were typically useful items: vases, sugar cannisters, trinket boxes, etc. When the attractive glass pieces came into fashion, jewelers began incorporating it into their pieces. Today, it is highly sought after and rare to find!

These wonderful French opaline glass earrings are crafted in pomponne, which is gold over silver. A string of four bright light blue graduated glass tiles hang from the hook element. The elegant fleur de lis and leaf design at the bottom anchors this piece, and proudly proclaims its French origins!
