During the Victorian Era, the custom of mourning became very popular. When Queen Victoria's beloved Prince Albert died, she famously remained in mourning for the rest of her life. The social norms required women to wear black for months or even years, depending upon the relationship one shared with the deceased. Even jewels were to be black, and onyx was a favorite. Men also participated in the mourning attire ritual, although the length of time was shorter than for women.

Mourning jewelry most often held heavy symbolism in the design, with flowers holding a language of their own.

This incredible onyx locket back pendant is crafted in 18 karat yellow gold, with diamond and pearl set forget me not flowers as well as pearl set lily of the valley, which meant a 'return to happiness' in the Victorian era. Seed pearls, representing 'tears of sorrow' also adorn the black enameled bale, exhibiting the fine attention to detail we so cherish from this time period. A piece of purple fabric under glass is on the reverse side, ready for your photograph, artwork, or a pressed flower. So beautifully made, and in flawless condition, you'll want to wear it all the time!
