Hand painted miniature portraits were the predecessors of photographs. When there was no other way to record a likeness of someone, the miniatures were treasured and passed down in families. Some portrait miniatures were painted of a specific person, and others were of classic style beauties rather than a particular real person. Often, these pieces were made into jewelry and worn as decoration, such as our brooch. The Victorians loved romantic depictions of classical Greek and Roman scenes, Medieval figures, and Fairy Tale scenes.
Crafted in 18 karat yellow gold, this wonderful French pendant has an amazing hand painted enamel artwork with two adorable figures. On the left is a little girl fairy, standing close to a human girl holding a birds' nest with open-beaked hatchlings. In the background is a dreamy flower garden. Glittering diamonds accent both the setting as well as the enamel work (even on the gossamer fairy wing!), like magical fairy dust sprinkled on the little scene. A pearl at the top rests in a golden shell, and another dangles at the bottom. A generous bale allows for any width of chain or ribbon to easily thread through it, while a lock of chestnut colored hair nestles securely in the locket back under a piece of beveled glass. A once in a lifetime piece, executed with incredible skill, and a must-have for any antique jewelry collector!
