Victorian gentlemen tended to decorate their watch chains with fobs. Watches were worn in the waistcoat pocket, with a chain attached for easy access. The fob helped to add a counterweight so the chain wouldn't be pulled by the heavier watch. Some fobs were merely ornamental, and others held a practical purpose and were put to use as stamps for sealing wax on letters, such as our example.
Crafted in 18 karat yellow gold, this watch fob has two intaglios: one side is bloodstone with the monogram CbH and the other is carved carnelian with a castle tower motif. A built in watch key rests snugly within the frame and swivels to be put to use. Unusual to find a fob in 18 karat, as they tended to be made in lower karats! Today, we love to see a watch fob worn on a chain around the neck. A perfect way to enjoy the wonderful little mechanisms of a by-gone era!
