"Bonnie Prince Charlie"

Antique 18K, Stuart Crystal & Enamel Mourning Ring

Stuart crystals are faceted rock quartz crystal jewels which originated as a form of mourning (or protest) jewelry after the execution of King Charles I of the House of Stuart in 1649.

This mourning ring commemorates the death of an individual with the initials of JM, who died July 16, 1738 at the age of 73. Presumably, the deceased was a follower of the House of Stuart. The square cut crystal shines from the face and is surrounded by black enameling with the mourning inscription on the ruffled 18 karat gold shank. A wonderful, fascinating, and important piece that will speak to antique jewelry collectors and history buffs alike!
