Crosses have been worn as symbols of Christianity for thousands of years, and the nineteenth century saw a surge of popularity in this motif with the Church being held in absolute regard, and piety cherished above all. The custom of wearing a cross pendant has remained in vogue ever since.

Crafted in rich 18 karat yellow gold, this cross pendant has a wonderful cut-out effect, with leafy scrolls on the body and a generous bale. Five natural seed pearls sit at each station and the center, which are most likely symbolic of 'tears of sorrow', a popular jewel to use in mourning jewelry during the era. In this case, it would be representing the mother of Christ, who wept at his crucifixion. Pearls were also associated with purity, and perhaps the meaning of these in particular have a dual meaning. A beautifully made piece, it will be a favorite for all who observe the faith.
