Antique 14K, Coral & Pearl Cross Necklace

In Ancient times, coral was worn as protection against evils. It was frequently tied to babies' clothing as well as adults (to ward off the Evil Eye). The warm hue and smooth texture of carved coral became popular during the Victorian Era, and more extravagant pieces were made.

Crosses have been worn as symbols of Christianity for thousands of years, and the nineteenth century saw a surge of popularity in this motif with the Church being held in absolute regard, and piety cherished above all. The custom of wearing a cross pendant has remained in vogue ever since.

Most likely made in Italy, this gorgeous cross necklace may have once been modified from a rosary. Beautiful filigree in rich 14 karat yellow gold forms stations of a long chain with bright orange coral beads. A stylized filigree heart and cross are separated by a natural seed pearl. An intriguing piece that combines ancient amulets with Christian motifs, and sure to be a favorite piece in your collection!
