Mourning jewelry became popular during the 18th century, when sentiment, both sorrowful and romantic, began to be expressed in a more allegorical style. The phrase 'Memento Mori" (Remember, you must die) was used profusely in art and literature, with the sentiment prominently displayed on mourning jewelry. This wonderful example is crafted in 18 karat yellow gold, with black enamel on the ring face and shoulders. Black and red enamel lettering spells out IN MEMORIAM, and a natural split pearl graces the center, which has a celestial motif with diamonds radiating outward in the form of a starburst. A locket back compartment most likely once held a lock of hair, but has since been removed. Fully hallmarked for London, 1869 it is a poignant and beautiful keepsake from long ago, and will be a favorite in your mourning jewelry collection!
