It is believed in Chinese tradition that Green Jade symbolized the five virtues of humanity: courage, modesty, justice, compassion, and wisdom. Mainly considered a symbol of serenity, tranquility, and purity, it is purported to bring in good luck, friendship, peace, and harmony as well. For millennia, the Chinese have regarded jade as the most precious of all earthly objects. In the 18th century, with the new availability of jadeite, green became the most coveted color of all, and that is still the case.
The carved jade in this piece is most likely antique, and was set in filligree at some point in the mid Twentieth Century. However, being unable to pinpoint an exact date, we are calling it a vintage stone. The apple colored jade has slight mottling and very fine carving depicting a bird amongst flowers on the surface of the disc. The beautiful work as well as the desirability of older jade in today's market make this a must-have for any serious jewelry collector.
