Coral is one of a very few organic gemstones. It consists of a mass of skeletons of tiny marine invertebrates that once lived in a colony attached to rocks or other objects on the ocean floor. The variety of coral that is of interest to jewelers and mystics is referred to as “precious coral”. It varies in color from a blood red to a very pale pink. During the 19th century, it became a very stylish accessory, and our red coral heart is a beautiful example.
We have married these pieces: a gorgeous 9 karat gold chain bracelet, and a precious carved coral heart padlock. This sort of bracelet was often given to a sweetheart prior to a gentleman setting out to tour the world, or to go into military service. It was a sweet token to remind one's lover that they must keep their heart safe until the two could be reunited. A dear treasure from long ago, ready for you to keep safe in your collection now!
