Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century gentlemen tended to decorate their watch chains with fobs. Watches were worn in the waistcoat pocket, with a chain attached for easy access. The fob helped to add a counterweight so the chain wouldn't be pulled by the heavier watch. Some fobs were merely ornamental, and others held a practical purpose and were put to use as stamps for sealing wax on letters and important documents, such as this example.

Part of the experience of being an upper-class gentleman was embarking on the 'Grand Tour', a rite of passage starting in the late 17th Century. It continued for about 300 years, tapering off into obscurity around the turn of the 20th Century. A typical "Grand Tourist" would be an educated and wealthy Englishman, German, Scandinavian, or American. The trip was a method of architectural, cultural and social study. The itinerary could vary, but usually a Tour started in France and ended in Italy. It was common to collect various art, jewelry, and souvenirs to commemorate the trip. These items were usually sent home for loved ones, kept as mementos, or formed the basis of new life-long collections for the men who took the trip. These cultural tours ignited admiration for the classics, with Greek and Roman mythology influencing the fashions in jewelry.

Crafted in 9 karat yellow gold, this fob has a wonderful carnelian intaglio depicting the goddess Minerva (her Greek counterpart is Athena), who can be identified by her Corinthian helmet. Riding a chariot, or perhaps on a boat, the figural design is part of a monogram, with the letters CR incorporated into the composition. Just imagine the fantastic seal this made back in the day!  Sure to become a favorite part of your 'neck mess', and a must-have for any antique jewelry collector!
