The colorful image of a vase, filled with flowers, is portrayed elegantly through this painted reverse intaglio brooch, a technique which causes the object to appear in 3-d and to seem to actually exist inside the domed crystal. . The cabochon-face crystal is set within a gold frame enclosure, its hidden posterior side bearing a reverse-carved relief, which is then hand-painted to reveal a three-dimensional image on the front side. The gold back frame bears a simple brooch pin and hook, along with a newer bale for use as a pendant.

Condition: The reverse intaglio image is carved with exceptional, precise detail, accurately portraying the image of a vase with flowers; the paintwork is well-done, with clean, intricate detailing. The crystal itself bears a smooth cabochon front surface, with no surface chips or cracks. the backing is actually mother-of-pearl. The gold is a high quality 18k yellow, with a bright luster. The bezel setting firmly holds the crystal in place. The pin works well. The bale does have obvious solder marks. Other than this, the piece bears only the most minor and typical age wear, expected for antique and vintage pieces; some slight occasional scratches, and a minor dent or two to the bezel setting. Generally an outstanding example of Essex-crystal craftspersonship!
