Victorians loved exotic subjects and native Americans provided a ready source in America and an unparalleled curiosity in Europe.  Thus the Use of Native American figure heads in architecture, coinage and jewelry.  It was a deliberate attempt to create a new style, free of the classic genres that dominated much of 19th-century art and design.

This ring is a great example of the sort, showing that beauty, style, and craftspersonship can all come together in a new iteration. It depicts the face of an Indian Chief in full headdress regalia; a mixture of sadness and scorn on his visage.  Indeed that is how native Americans were depicted in that period. Originally a cuff link, we have had it converted into a ring using a replica of an antique shank with bear claws on the shoulders.
