Intaglios were used in ancient Rome as seals for documents and goods. Men of all stations owned them, with precious gems or stones favored by the upper classes. However, glass intaglios were used by men of less wealth, and we have just such an example.
This remarkable conversion ring features a glass intaglio, most likely ancient Roman! The scene depicts a man on one knee, milking a goat. It is very similar to a carnelian intaglio at the British Museum, dated 1st Century, BC. It was probably used to seal or 'brand' vessels of goats' milk, which a shepherd or farmer could sell at market. We have had it set in a beautiful, architectural shank of 18 karat yellow gold, elevating it into the twenty-first century and beyond!
