During the middle of the nineteenth century, jewelry styles turned to the past for inspiration and a Renaissance Revival took place. Opulent pieces with large gems, medallions and dangling elements were in vogue, copying the styles seen in portraits from the era. This craze swept all of Europe, and the Austrians excelled in the execution.
Crafted in vermeil (gold over silver), this wonderful necklace and earrings set has a central medallion set with glittering foiled back pink tourmaline stones. The square linked collar is set with more tourmalines and emeralds, while smaller medallions hold tourmaline, opal and green paste stones. A pair of opal earrings with 18 karat yellow gold hooks completes the demi parure. The closed backs have elaborate repousse work, a delightful detail that adds to the special quality of this very rare piece.
